Badami

Badami. Badami was the Chalukyan capital from A.D 540 to 757. The place is full of archaeological gems. Dominating the scene is the massive red sandstone gorge in which Badami sits. On one side of the gorge and cut into the rocks are a 4 caves, Shiva, Vishnu and Jain sculptures adorn the walls. Some of the best preserved and detailed we have seen.
Below the caves and at the far end of Badami Town lies the huge Agastyatirtha Bathing Tank.
To the East and on the other side of the gorge, the hillside Shivalaya temples cling precariously to the rock faces, the climb up isn't a picnic either.. Contrasting the steep and hard climb there is a tank side walk to the impressive Bhutanatha Temple which sits at the end of the two gorges. A fantastic back drop.
