Bharatpur, Fatehpur Sikri & Deeg

Bharatpur Caught another early bus this time from Agra to Bharatpur, hoping to stay here a few days as the accommodation is cheap and only a 5 min walk to the National Park entrance..

Went to explore the Keoladeo Ghana National Park 7 hours of walking and "rickshawing" a new word for the 2010 Oxford inclusions ? Saw a plethora of wildlife including, Black Cobra, Python, Mongoose, Antelope, Monkeys, Mud flat tortoises and a multitude of birds. On the park there is an old temple which we visited, while we were there we witnessed a Holy man summon a whole load of mudflat tortoises and fed them on the temple steps, quite amazing.

Next day we decided to hop on yet another local bus to Fatehpur Sikri just 30 min down the road from Bharatpur. Fatehpur Sikri houses an old fortified ghost city ( except for the ticket booth which seemed fully functional ) The fort and palace were built in memorial of a son to one of the ancient rulers but as it was built in an area of very low precipitation it was shortly abandoned after its completion ( bit like the Millennium Dome ! ) The complex consisted of many buildings and unlike most that we had seen this complex lacked the consistent symmetry we had seen in almost every other temple or fort. After roaming around the fort we strolled across the site to visit the working Jama Masjid mosque ( yes another Jama Masjid ) Jama meaning Friday and Masjid meaning Mosque ... Friday Mosque ! There is reputedly a tunnel linking the Mosque to the Red Fort at Agra, we saw the barred entrance !!

On the way out we spied this rather funky Donkey, must be a throw back to the 80's and the punk era .
Another day another Bus, this time an hour and a bit to the city of Deeg. Deeg was used by the rulers of Bharatpur as their summer retreat. They constructed a series of summer palaces surrounded by water, the idea being this would keep them cool.
